Theories of Architecture & Urbanism
Project 1A: Case Study
Jahn Gehl in the Life Between Buildings (1971) “examined the relationship between patterns of space use, especially outdoor activities, and the spatial properties of the physical world. He introduced the concepts of necessary, optimal and social activities. For this particular task, we were to read Jahn Gehl’s Life Between Buildings (Chapter 1). Subsequently, we were to examine patterns of social activities in a city which was Mumbai, India and identify ‘contact points’. We were to classify the varying degrees of contact intensity.

Project 1B: Comparative Analysis Essay
The second project of the module was completed near the end of the semester, and is technically the last project of the subject, although it is the second half of the first project, and therefore, the “second project”. This second part of the project requires us to write a 2000 word comparative analysis essay based on the findings from the first case study and the site research from the other module “Studio V”. From this, we were to examine the similarities and dissimilarities based on the patterns of social activites, “types” of contact points, and the carrying degrees of context intensity between the two cities.

Project 2: Synopsis
The third project of the module was completed between the first and second half of Project #01. Subsequent to the thematic lecture, we were required to submit a series of synopsises in the form of a reaction paper. Its aim is for us to read the selected text in relation to a certain theme that has been discussed in class, and write a structured reaction synopsis of the themes of the extract. The point of this paper is to stretch our ability to diagnose and identify the key points of the highlighted text, then focus the personal perspective on the issues raised through the text.
