Building Construction 2

Project 1: Skeletal Construction

Experiencing and understanding skeletal construction is important as it is one of the most widely used structures for building support. As a designer we should know how skeletal structure works.

In this first project, we are required to form a group of 6 and construct a temporary bus shelter based on a few specifications, which are, form to be a combinations of 2 geometry as given and the construction must demonstrate the knowledge of skeleton frame and its joints, and should be elevated 50mm off the ground.

The temporary bus shelter that we construct are also in the scale of 1:5 where accomodation of up to 5 -6 people is considered. In this project, rattan is chosen as the overall structural materials as it is, first, recyclable and does not pollute the environment. Also, it can be bent into a curvy shape by heating. Curved rattan provides more tensile strength due to its ability and with futher add on of bracings, rattan holds up firmly and tightly. Structure will be stiffer, stronger and stable.

This are the final outcome of the project:

Project 2: Understanding Forces

A building normally comprises of several different types of constructional systems, either due to its function or building code requirements. As designers, it is very important that you understand when and where each of the different type of constructional system is used. Today, tensile and grid shell construction methods are becoming widely used structures for building support. It provides the required load bearing resistance and aesthetics required by designers. Today, technological advancement is creating the path for innovations in building construction through exploration of materials, construction techniques and information technologies to produce more effective design approaches and features that will suit the designers’ preferences, environment needs and etc..

In this final project, it is we are to form a group of 4 people and carry out a thorough study on the building chosen, which is either tensile strength or gridshell structure. We have decided to chose Aboatash Amphitheatre which is located in Iran.

Studies and research have been conducted about the Aboatash Amphitheatre which is a structure that uses tensile strength, we produced a 1:150 model , a detailed joint model, a technical drawing and a presentation board. Futher boards attached below shows our understanding of this building's structure.

Reflection

Projects 1&2 of building construction has taught me about contruction details and how to construct a building not just by design but also on the technical side of the structure and the way it supports the building. It also helps me gain trust & teamwork to work together to finish the project.
