Project 1: Elderly Personal Space

This project  consisted of a short, quick project based on designing a “personal space” for a client in an elderly home. Sorted into groups of three, we were tasked to design a space that catered purely for the interests and specifications of our chosen client. Next, we made a site visit to the location, we were to study three different “locations” for our personal space, somewhere within the compound of the elderly nursing home. From there, we would decide on one of the three locations, with proper justifications as to why we have chosen said area.

Through our own observations and some questions during an interview with our chosen client, we would design a space no bigger than 12 metres cube. We would be graded on multiple factors, such as our understanding of our client, sensitivity to her needs, ergonomics, anthropometrics, construction, function and other special fixtures. We have chosen Ms. Anna as our client and below is the space we've designed for her.

Project 2A: Site Anlaysis

This Project 2 is split into 2 parts. The first part is an in-depth and detailed study of our allocated site. To be done in our tutorial groups, tasks were split to different members, and the submission required for a compiled, comprehensive overview of various factors that make a proper site-visit analysis board.

Covering topics from the macro to the micro, each member was expected to provide an even contribution.

Below is the final copy of the group site analysis board.

Project 2B: Elderly Community Center

From understanding our macro site in Part A, we began with creating visceral boards of our personal understanding. Doing so allows us to conceive a concept for our proposal.

Several mandatory requirements were also set, such as the limit of spatial volume, perimeter setback, and spatial program. The final requirements consisted of 4 A1 boards, inclusive of proper orthographics, progressive sketches and a personal site analysis.

A final model was also expected, along with our progressive models to show a consistent flow in design intention.

Reflection

Through Project 1 to 2B, I've learned to design a space according to the clients needs, while also responding to the contextual architecture. I've learned the importance of clustered building in a sub-urban context and the way the form follows function in my elderly center. I have also learned to make design processes part of the importance of coming out with the final outcome. In conclusion, a building needs to be designed with a relationship to it's surroundings and also to the occupants, climate, ergonomics, anthropometrics, construction, function and other special fixtures.
