Building Structures

Project 1: Roof Truss

For project one, it aims to develop student’s understanding on the potential of truss system in their design. It also help develop student’s understanding of force distribution in a truss and design a roof truss which fulfills the following criteria: High aesthetic value, and Minimal construction material. Therefore in this project, we are required to form a group of 5 members and select one of the member's design for studio 3 to carry out this project. By working in a group, the selected building's roof is then re-designed by using truss designs.

For the final outcome, we are required to produce a roof truss model, a A2 sized board and an A4 sized report with the calculations of trusses.

Project 2: Structural Analysis of a Bungalow

This project is another group project which focuses on the structural analysis of concrete beams and columns. In a group of three, we were required to produce structural drawings of a reinforced concrete bungalow. Then each group member is to propose their own structural calculation of selected 6 beams and 3 columns of the building. A report was to be produced.

Reflection

Through Project 1 to 2, I've learned the importance of a building structure and how the design effects the structure. I've also learned the calculations of beams, columns, shear force and bending moment in the building and it's application in our daily life.
