Architectural Design Studio 2
Project 1: Famous People, Familiar Faces
Diagrammatic Abstraction (Group) To investigate and explore how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics. Upon completion of the project, students should be able to achieve a level of understanding on the works assigned and will be able to apply the idea and concept to Project 2. The idea of using pure and diagrammatic drawing to express the
architectural idea would also be in cooperated into this assignment.

Reflection
This project has taught me more about other architectural styles that are used by famous architects in history such as Falling water by Frank Lyold Wright and use those techniques to make an abstract art of models which further explores design concepts and creativity. This also enhances thinking skills and teamwork to carry out this project

Project 2 : Building + Nature
Project 2 consists of two parts;
(1) Project 2a: Observation Deck (Group of 2)
This is a 4 week project where students are required to understand the concept of simple space planning requirement of an observation deck (with a maximum volume of 30m3) in relations to the architectural languages from Project 1. Students are also required to conduct simple site analysis of the physical context of the site.
1. Introduction to Site Analysis
In group of 2, conduct site analysis of the physical context within the overall site. Use the following reference as a framework for your recording and analysis of your site: White, E. 2004. Site Analysis: Diagramming Information for Architectural Design. Tallahassee, Florida: Architectural Media Ltd. Collect data and record on the following using physical maps/diagrams:
Site plan (Site section, Site Boundaries, North Point, Contours)
Existing Structure (Significant Architectural Language/Feature , Adjacent building/structure building to remain/demolish)
Landscape (Natural features, Soil Condition, Surface Drainage, Existing vegetation)
Climatic Studies (Sun path, wind direction, rain)
Circulation pattern (pedestrian, vehicular)
Views and Vistas (Panoramic /spot in, out, approaching)
Activities (category -dry/wet, zoning, noise)
Case Studies (Grand Canyon Skywalk, Arizona + Pinohuacho observation deck, Chile)
2. Observation Deck @ Cape Rachado
In group of 2, you are to design an Observation Deck (with a maximum volume of 30m3) for the purpose of observing the views. It shall include other activity(s) such as meditation, relaxation, etc. in which furniture and equipment must fit and be incorporated into the design. This structure should correspond to the site that you have chosen. Adequate access, circulation and fenestration are mandatory.

Reflection
Project 2A requires alot of thinking skills as well as teamwork. Me & my partner, Tang Ze Zeng had alot of hard times getting our ideas together because we both think differently and that taught me that we should think together rather than separately to come up with a final design.

(2) Project 2b: Retreat House (Individual)
This project requires the students to further explore the idea of the observation deck into a more complex program. Students are required to understand the spatial requirement (maximum area 150m2) of a retreat house and translate them onto architectural program that includes public and private spaces for relaxing, dining, cooking, washing and etc.

Reflection
In this final project, creating a retreat house according to a client's need is a completely new experience for me as it requires understanding the client more and applying designs according to his/her needs. Besides that, this project also has taught me how to make a functional design through concepts, progress and process.
